Japanese-inspired fish soup

Recipe is for two. Boil 4 cups of water with a strip or two of kombu. Throw in some ginger, garlic, couple of quartered tomatoes, fish (we used smelt in the picture below), bunch of mushrooms (we used maitake mushrooms in picture below)a tbsp each of fish sauce and soy sauce, couple of broken dry red chilles, and anything else you fancy really (suggestions: kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, bell pepper, broccoli, tofu...). Let all that boil on medium for about 15 min. Then throw in some strips of cabbage and cook about 5 min more, cabbage should still be a bit firm. Serve :) Great hot or chilled. Optional, top with coarse black pepper.
